KLient Story: Coulter Family Dentistry

Dr. Brian Coulter has been in private practice since he graduated from Indiana University School of Dentistry in May 1993 (go Hoosiers).  Dr. Coulter’s thriving, family-friendly dental practice is located in Mishawaka. He’s been a friend and KLient of Kruggel Lawton's since 2000.

After college, he wanted his own business in a great place to raise a family. He focused his mission to buy a practice in a college town. He started with 300 letters, and follow-up phone calls in search of an Indiana starting point. His search ultimately led to a retiring dentist ready to transition. With 400 square feet on Miami Street, 200 patients, one chair, and one staff member, the practice ownership and operation smoothly transferred to Dr. Coulter in one week.

As technology, patient, and practice trends evolved, the complexities of business and decision-making changed as well. Dr. Coulter called Kruggel Lawton to help him manage the business and assess opportunities. “I’ve had accountants that didn’t have enough experience in the medical/dental field, but they were accountants…good, but didn’t see the big picture for this type of practice. Kruggel Lawton has helped a lot…looking at the big picture, not just the numbers, but giving me direction and advice about which way to go.”

When asked about what makes his practice different, Dr. Coulter responded that two main goals guide him. First, he wants to change the persona of dentistry, so people are no longer afraid to visit. In order to do this, he provides intravenous sedation as an option, among other comfort-enhancing, fear-reducing procedures. Second, he provides customer service that is far better than his patients have come to expect in their other business dealings. He wants his legacy to be “unmatched customer service.”

Dr. Coulter loves what he does, and future plans include “practicing as long as I’m healthy, physically able to.” One of his sons has been shadowing him and Dr. Coulter plans to continue building the practice then bringing in his son (or someone like him) – to share the workload. Dr. Coulter will be able to back off a bit but keep practicing because he genuinely enjoys being with his patients and is in no hurry to “get out the door.”

Dr. Coulter added:

“I look at Kruggel Lawton like a financial advisor for the practice. They give me a lot of information on business management and they’re always there when I need them. They get back quickly with the answers. They're not just answering my questions. They're watching my back. They're making sure that everything's being taken care of properly. I trust them… the whole firm. I’ve never felt like a number. I’ve always felt their service is very good, it’s very consistent, and I don’t feel I’ve been led down the wrong path ever. That matches my own values for my practice. It’s important to me. I like Kruggel Lawton and plan on staying with them.”
