Tax Deadlines 2018

April 17, 2018

In most years, Tax Day is April 15, a date that is well known by many people. However, April 15, 2018, falls on a Sunday, and Monday, April 16, is the date of observance for a Washington, D.C., holiday known as Emancipation Day. So the tax deadline is the following day - April 17.

You can file your 2017 tax return as early as January 1, although as of November 3, the IRS has not yet announced when it will begin to accept e-filed returns. It's generally a good idea to file as early as is practical, as early filing not only can result in a speedier refund, but is also one of the best safeguards against fraudulent tax returns being filed in your name.

Here's the full list of deadlines:

  • Deadline to file individual tax returns (Form 1040, 1040A, or 1040EZ) for the year 2016 or to request an Automatic Extension (Form 4868). An extension provides an extra six months to file your return. Taxpayers who can't make payments should request (on Form 9465) an agreement to pay in installments. Extended returns will be due October 15.
  • Deadline to file estate income tax or trust income tax returns (Form 1041) or to request an automatic 5-month extension (due September 30) of time to file (Form 7004).
  • Deadline for Form 1120, U.S. Corporation Income Tax Return (extensions until Sept. 15 (through 2027), see note below)
  • Last day to make a contribution to traditional IRA, Roth IRA, Health Savings Account, SEP-IRA or solo 401(k) for the 2017 tax year. (However, if you get an extension, you will have until October 15 to fund a SEP-IRA or solo 401(k).
  • 1st quarter estimated tax payments due for the 2018 tax year. If you aren't paying your 2018 income tax withholding (or won't pay in enough tax during the year that way), pay the first installment of your 2018 estimated tax by this date. Use Form 1040-ES, or pay by various electronic means.
  • Calendar year corporations must deposit the first installment of estimated income tax for 2018.
  • Final deadline to file an original tax return (Form 1040) for tax year 2014 and still claim a tax refund, as refunds expire three years from the original due date of the tax return.
  • Final deadline to file amended tax return (Form 1040X) for tax year 2014 and still claim a tax refund. (Be sure to mail the amended return well before April 17 to make sure your tax refund will be processed in a timely manner. And be sure to obtain proof of mailing, such as a certified mail receipt.)
  • Final deadline for estates, trusts, or partnerships to file an amended tax return and still claim a tax refund for the year 2014, as refunds expire three years from the original due date of the tax return.

Note: Calendar-year C corporations can get extensions until Sept. 15 until tax years beginning after 2025, when the extended due date will be Oct. 15. June 30 fiscal-year-end C corporations (returns due Sept. 15) can get extensions to April 15 until tax years beginning after 2025; after 2025, June 30 fiscal-year-end C corporations will have an Oct. 15 due date and can get extensions until April 15.
